Students in Bowie ISD were coming to school hungry and unfocused, and Backpack Buddies was implemented
to address the problem. In a school-community-social agency endeavor, food was provided to children
so they would have nutrition over the weekend. Discipline problems plummeted and TAKS scores soared.
ABC covered the story and, as a result, Backpack Buddies has spread across the nation and abroad.
